Unique Ideas

As a filmmaker, Willy Bogner Jr is not only full of ideas, but has also always been enthusiastic about the latest technology. In 1966, his first film “Ski Fascination” offered a combination that had never been seen before in sports films; a choreography of snow artistry, sketches and ski ballet, shot in Ultrascope! The shots, which were as novel as they were spectacular, were the reason why Willy was hired for the 1969 James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. And for the fast-paced 007 ski shots he quickly invented a special mount for the 16 kg Panavision camera including a Hasselblad viewfinder system.

The result is legendary - just like his idea for the BO-SY split screen in the winter of 1986/87. Willy had noticed that there had been a lot of changes in Alpine ski races in the preceding years - but the spectators didn’t notice the speed of the downhill runs on the screen. Differences of hundredths of a second could not be made out. BO-SY had the answer. With this split-screen procedure, each starter can be switched live against the leader and clearly compared.

But Willy’s film “White Magic” from 1994 was in a class of its own by comparison. At the première, the audience experienced an interactive ski film in RealD 3D! For three winters, he had filmed furious action for the sports spectacular in Canada, Iceland and Switzerland. For the 600 guests at the première, BOGNER projected the film under a starry sky at ten degrees below zero onto a glacier wall at the Corvatsch in the Swiss Engadin - and at the same time had winter athletes perform their action live on the slopes. It looked like someone was racing down the screen, framed by paragliders and snowboarders jumping through flaming hoops. Mayhem and madness in deep snow!
